BalSwan Ball 2012
About Bal Swan
Bal Swan Children’s Center is a private non-profit (501c3) school that serves children with all types of disabilities blended in the classroom with typical preschoolers. We serve nearly 500 children a year, birth through 12 years of age. Our students are from Boulder, Superior, Louisville, Lafayette, Erie, Broomfield, Arvada, Northglenn, Thornton, Federal Heights and Westminster.
The students with disabilities receive full therapy services in speech therapy, occupational-motor therapy, physical therapy, and warm-water pool therapy. Children with disabilities who qualify through our funding agencies receive services at no cost to their families. Parents of typical children pay tuition just as they would for any preschool in town.

Bal Swan Children’s Center was the first school in State of Colorado to enroll typical students with children who have special needs. We became a pilot program for the state in 1963 and again in 1973. Our Center’s innovative idea of inclusion is considered best practice.
We have two major fund-raisers each year; The Bal Swan Ball, and Golf 4 Kidz. We have other smaller fund-raisers throughout the year, write grants and work to solicit both individual and corporate contributions.
Thanks to your generous support Bal Swan Children's Center has much to celebrate! Bal Swan has 10 classrooms which offer two-hour, full day, and half day preschool programming. We also have a warm-water therapy pool, a state-of-the-art physical, occupational and speech therapy room. Our Therapy Department provides services to children who attend Bal Swan for preschool, as well as children from our community. Our psychologist provides counseling services to students, parents and staff at no cost. Class size remains small and the student-to-staff ratio is low. Out of thousands of child care centers state-wide, Bal Swan is one of only 106 early childhood environments in the state of Colorado, and the only preschool in Broomfield, with a 4-out-of-4-star rating from Qualistar! Educators and leaders responsible for the future of Early Childhood Education worldwide have been touring the school; they are all learning from Bal Swan's intentional Pyramid Model teaching practices. The Center now celebrates 47 years of educating children, and its foundation of caring and acceptance remains unchanged.
We would love to have you visit our Center and see our program in action! Please call if you have any questions, or if you would like a tour of Bal Swan Children's Center. Our phone number is (303) 466-6308 and we are on the web at

Through the diligent and kind work of the therapists, Riley was able to gain great strides and will no longer need therapy by the time he enters kindergarten. Without Bal Swan’s help, I am not sure we would have had the same wonderful outcome. Equally as important in the life of Riley has been his wonderful teachers. He feels accepted and appreciated for who he is and has made many friends in his classroom. The foundation he has received at Bal Swan has prepared him well for kindergarten.

We feel so passionate about the services that our children receive at Bal Swan that we have volunteered at the school since Will was first enrolled five years ago. Volunteering helps us feel connected to what’s going on in the classroom and in the building. Supporting the school feels right; they do so much for the Bal Swan community. We can honestly say that Bal Swan has provided our family with a tremendous learning and growing experience and given us many positive memories to look back on with our children.

All the teachers we have had the pleasure to work were terrific mentors, they have never lost sight of what counts most - giving our children the individual attention, tools and love they need to grow into great citizens. Thanks to the social skills the teachers intentionally teach at Bal Swan, George has developed into a considerate and confident boy. We will be forever grateful for the solid foundation our sons have found at Bal Swan.

I have to admit that we felt like quite a spectacle everywhere we went. Most people have seen elder persons using walkers, but it is less common to see such a short person with a little walker. When we walked through the doors of Bal Swan, the adults and children greeted Jillian with smiles and loving words. The children hardly seemed to notice her walker, which spoke volumes to us about the level of acceptance that Bal Swan fosters in children who go to school here.

The first time I walked through the doors at Bal Swan, it felt like home. No, not the kids screaming, dog barking, phone ringing part, but the warm, loving, comfortable part. I remember walking in with my son Michael who was 2 1⁄2 at the time and Patti (the Director of Education) seeing him for the first time came up to Michael, kneeled down & starting to talk and sign with him. The love on her face and the passion in her heart was easy to see – I knew we were in the right place.
